I sent an email update on Thursday with the latest on what I'm doing to keep Sacramento County safe. Please click here to join my updates now so you don't miss any in the future!

Our nation is in mourning after a terrorist killed 49 of our fellow Americans in Orlando. My thoughts are with the victims, families, and first responders, and I know yours are too. And understandably, many families are looking for answers after this horrific tragedy.

This was an attack on the core American value of equality for all. Keeping Americans safe is my greatest responsibility as your representative. So today, I wanted to give an update on my work to keep America safe and to give you a chance to share your views.

Should Congress act to stop suspected terrorists from buying guns?

Both parties need to work together to secure our homeland as we respect the rights of law abiding and responsible gun owners. And one crucial step we should take is to close the dangerous loophole that let’s people suspected of terrorism by the FBI legally buy guns.

All Americans, gun owners and non-gun owners alike, care about our country and want to keep our families safe. We may not be able to prevent every tragedy, but we can make progress if we work together to find common ground.

As a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, I take our nation’s safety very seriously and am working with both parties to keep our country safe. We need to defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and other terrorists who threaten us.

Our response must include airstrikes, choking off their finances, and using our intelligence agencies to weaken them. We must ensure our partners in the region do their part to fight ISIL and take away more of their territory. I’m also supporting a bipartisan bill to ensure we do a better job of opposing ISIL’s vicious online propaganda that urges attacks on innocent people.

And as we remain true to our values as a welcoming nation, we should also do more to prevent terrorists from coming to the United States. This is why I supported a bipartisan bill to ensure terrorists can’t abuse our immigrant visa process, which is now law, and another bipartisan bill to increase international border security and to stop travel by terrorists and foreign fighters.

We need to recommit ourselves to securing our homeland. That’s why I’ve supported strong funding for our Homeland Security Department and funding to help our police and first responders do their jobs. But we also need to address the dangerous loophole that allows suspected terrorists on the FBI’s watch list to legally buy guns. In fact, an independent investigation found that hundreds of suspected terrorists on the FBI watch list have legally bought guns over the years.1

All Americans, gun owners and non-gun owners alike, want to keep our families safe. With appropriate safeguards that respect gun owners' rights, we need to come together and agree on common sense steps to make America safer >>

This is a time when every American – regardless of political party, ethnic background, or religion - should stand together and unite to stiffen our resolve. This was an attack on the core American value of equality for all and targeted members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community simply because of who they are. We have to be vigilant and relentless as we stand against this hatred, but also strong and wise, as we move forward to defeat ISIL and other terrorist groups.

It’s an honor to serve you. Please always feel free to contact my office to share your thoughts.
