I’m in Sacramento County this month meeting and listening to local families, seniors, and small business owners. Here’s a brief update:

Medicare Champion

On Thursday, I was recognized as a Medicare Champion by local seniors and the Coalition for Medicare Choices, a national grassroots group made-up of more than 1.6 million people who receive their health care through Medicare Advantage.

As a doctor who’s cared for countless seniors, I was honored by this recognition.

Medicare Advantage plans cover nearly 100,000 seniors in Sacramento County, and deliver improved health outcomes while bringing down costs. We must honor this promise that we've made to our seniors so they can get the support and health care they need, and have a secure and dignified retirement.

That’s why I'm refusing my congressional pension until both Medicare and Social Security are secure for today’s seniors and future generations. It’s also why I argued successfully earlier this year to stop cuts to Medicare Advantage.

Listening to Employees and Local Businesses

I've also been meeting with workers and businesses throughout Sacramento County so I can better understand their concerns.

For example, earlier this week I took part in a town hall with employees from California ISO, which operates our state’s wholesale electrical transmission grid.

I spent a morning with them discussing everything from education and foreign affairs, to bipartisan solutions for veterans and our economy. I was thoroughly impressed by their thoughtfulness, and the work they do.

I also visited with Markstein Beverage Company, a wholesale beer distributor in the Sacramento area. I took a tour of their facility to learn more about their business and so I could be a more effective advocate for them in Congress.

If you or someone you know is a business owner in our area, please feel free to contact my office (916) 635 0505. My staff and I are here to help you if you ever need help with the federal government, and I always want to hear your perspective on how I can better serve you. I’m also always interested in visiting with as many local businesses as I can.

Upcoming events

In addition, my office has been hosting various events and workshops to help connect local families and businesses with any tools and resources they may need.

Just last week we hosted a job fair in conjunction with Assemblyman Ken Cooley to help connect job seekers with employers in Sacramento County who are hiring. In the weeks and months to come, my office will host several more events to help families, small business owners, seniors, and more.

At a job fair my office recently hosted in conjunction with California Assemblyman Ken Cooley to help connect local job seekers with employment.

For instance, next week my office will host two water conservation and drought workshops to help residents who are being harmed by California’s historic drought. My staff is also partnering with the Sacramento County library’s bookmobile so they can be available at senior residences and other locations throughout our region to assist seniors who need help with Social Security, Medicare, and other problems with the federal government.

Making government work for you is one of my most important jobs. We need to start putting people ahead of politics and making Congress a place for service, not career politicians who are in it for themselves.

As always, I appreciate hearing your thoughts and concerns. My door is always open.

Be well,

Ami Bera, M.D.
