Congressman Ami Bera met with U.S. Postal Service mail carrier Scott Gallegos, who was hailed a hero after saving a woman's life in April.

On the morning of April 27, Gallegos had just started on his morning route when suddenly a woman covered in blood knocked on his window. The Iraq veteran quickly moved his mail truck between the woman and the shooter and tended to her wounds.

"I think a lot of it was instinct and maybe just human nature. I mean, she was hurt, and she needed help," Gallegos said.

Because of Gallegos' brave actions, the woman made a full recovery. Earlier this month, he received the National Association of Letter Carriers' "Hero of the Year" award in Washington, D.C.

Sunday, Congressman Ami Bera met with Gallegos again at the Mail Carriers' Union picnic and presented him with a congressional certificate.

Despite all of Gallegos' recognition and media attention, to his 14-year-old daughter, Erica, he remains "Dad." She said this whole thing has been a whirlwind.

"It's really crazy like, having everyone be like, 'Oh my god, it's that mail man hero dude.' And I'm like, 'That's my dad,'" Erica Gallegos said.

The humble and soft-spoken Gallegos did not say much at the picnic. He did say he is ready to get back to the simple life.

"I want to stay low-key. Deliver mail," Gallegos laughed.

Since the shooting, the Gallegos family has met with the victim's family. They spent the July 4th holiday getting to know each other.
