Vote comes amid nation-wide expansion of restrictive reproductive health care legislation

WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-07) today voted for the Women’s Health Protection Act, legislation that would ensure access to reproductive health care for women across the country, regardless of what state they live in.

“As a doctor, I strongly believe that a woman’s personal health decisions should be made between her and her doctor, not outside politicians,” said Representative Bera. “Despite the Roe v. Wade decision nearly five decades ago that should ensure a woman’s access to the full range of health care options, including a safe and legal abortion, Republicans across the country are ramping up their all-out assault on women’s basic health freedoms. With the Women’s Health Protection Act, Congress is taking an important step in codifying the constitutional protections under Roe v. Wade to ensure politicians never get in between a woman and her health care provider regarding her own personal health decisions. I am proud to stand with women across the country in their fight for health care and reproductive rights”

As a physician, husband, and as a father of a daughter, Representative Bera has long championed women’s access to health care. Bera has consistently and repeatedly opposed reckless legislation to limit a woman’s personal reproductive health care decisions, and he was honored in 2015 with the Planned Parenthood Women’s Health Champion Award for his work on behalf of women and their health care.
