Today, U.S. Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06), a senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, introduced a bipartisan resolution alongside Representatives Mark Amodei (R-NV-02) and Bill Keating (D-MA-09) recognizing the vital role of the Arctic Council and reaffirming the United States’ commitment to maintaining leadership and collaboration in the Arctic region. Companion legislation has been introduced in the Senate by Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).

Following its initial creation by the State Department in 2022, this bill would formally codify the position of U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Arctic Affairs to ensure the role becomes a permanent fixture of U.S. foreign policy and Arctic engagement.
