Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. offered an amendment today to prioritize the hiring of unemployed workers and veterans and the use of American-made equipment and materials in mining operations. The proposal would amend H.R. 2824, the so-called Preventing Government Waste and Protecting Coal Mining Jobs in America bill, which would actually create more waste – not less.

“Instead of voting on divisive bills that threaten communities and their water with toxic mining waste, we need to focus on creating jobs and getting unemployed Americans, especially our out-of-work veterans, back to work,” said Bera. “American families want their leaders to work together to rebuild an economy that works for the middle class, not more partisan politics.”
