Press Release
Congressman Bera comments on HR 3009
Washington, DC,
July 23, 2015
Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. released the following statement on HR 3009: "Making sure Sacramento County residents are safe is one of my most important duties as their representative. In October, right in our own backyard, an individual with a long criminal record who'd been deported multiple times, shot and killed two local sheriff's deputies, Danny Oliver and Michael Davis. I've gotten to know the Oliver family over the past few months, and we must ensure preventable tragedies like these don't happen in the future. Today's bill is a step in that direction. That being said, let me be clear, I believe comprehensive immigration reform is still the only way to deal with what is clearly a systemic problem. Our current immigration system is broken and in order to have a true, long-term fix, we need bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform that both strengthens our borders, and allows the best and the brightest to stay in the United States to contribute to our economy. As the son of immigrants who came to this country legally and made a better life for their family, I know that our country's success would not be possible without the contributions of immigrants who've come here. That's why I've been fighting for comprehensive immigration reform since I got to Congress." |
