Bera Discusses Economic and Strategic Importance of India-Afghanistan Relationship in House Foreign Affairs Committee

Today, Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-7) discussed the relationship between India and Afghanistan at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, where he questioned U.S Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Olson. Bera discussed the need for the United States to work with India to strengthen economic and security interests in Afghanistan.

“We need to invest and maintain economic growth for stability in Afghanistan. The United States has invested billions of dollars and lost hundreds of lives in the last decade [in Afghanistan],” said Congressman Bera. “India as the major economy in South Asia clearly has a role in helping increase trade with Afghanistan. Through economic development and trade, you can create some stability, and I encourage State [Department] to push that agenda.”
