Rep. Ami Bera Denounces Trump’s Decision to End Birth Control Coverage Protections

Sacramento, CA – Rep. Ami Bera, M.D. released the following statement after news broke that the Trump administration will roll back the Affordable Care Act's birth control coverage rules:

"As a doctor, I am deeply concerned and angered by the Trump administration's decision to repeal the contraception coverage requirements in the Affordable Care Act. This rule will allow bosses to deny birth control coverage and decide what's best for women. As a medical professional and public health expert, that's unacceptable.

Birth control is health care. It enables women to live healthier lives and enhances their economic security. A woman's health decisions should be between her and her doctor – not her boss or Washington politicians. My job as a doctor is to listen to patients, answer their questions, and empower them to make the decisions that best fit their lives.

There is no greater decision than when to start a family and become a mother. Striking this rule will make it more difficult for millions of American families to access birth control and place a large financial burden on the 62 million women who use birth control. My message to the Trump administration is crystal clear: stop playing politics with women's health.

Every doctor swears an oath to do no harm; this decision does a great deal of harm. I urge the administration to immediately reverse this decision. Every American deserves access to quality, affordable health care to lead health and productive lives – and that means contraception."
