HR 1585, The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA), passed last week in the House of Representatives, which included an amendment from Representative Ami Bera (D-CA) that enhances culturally specific services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

"Domestic violence is a devastating reality for many women in the US, and in particular, for the South Asian and Indian American communities. It is often difficult for survivors in these communities to be heard and supported given cultural barriers and generational gaps," said Representative Bera. "Urgent action is needed now to ensure that survivors are protected and receive adequate resources. I am proud that my amendment would increase funding for grants that support organizations that provide critical services to domestic violence and sexual assault survivors in communities of color."

Recent surveys note that 40 to 60 percent of AAPI women experience physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act reaffirms protections for every woman, improves the services available for victims and survivors, and empowers law enforcement to make their communities safer. The Congressman strongly supports this legislation which passed the House of Representatives last week with bipartisan support.

Congressman Bera is the longest-serving Indian American currently serving in the Congress.
