Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA) released the following statement today on news that Ebola has spread from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Uganda, the first cross-border case of the virus since the outbreak started last year.

"The news that Ebola has spread from the Congo to Uganda is an unsettling reminder that infectious diseases do not respect country borders," said Rep. Bera. "The US must continue to lead on global health security, including by fully funding aid programs that detect and respond to pandemic threats."

As a doctor, Congressman Bera has always been a strong supporter of American leadership in global health. In March 2019, Rep. Bera led a bipartisan letter urging Congress to sustain global health security funding. In May 2018, Rep. Bera successfully urged the Administration to halt shortsighted Ebola funding cuts. He also led efforts by the Foreign Affairs Committee to address the global Zika epidemic and has pushed Congress to do more to stop future outbreaks.

Rep. Bera is Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee and is a member of the CSIS Commission on Strengthening America's Health Security.
