The House of Representatives voted today to pass Rep. Ami Bera's (D-CA) resolution recognizing the 70^th anniversary of the start of the Korean War and the strong alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea.

"Seventy years after the start of the Korean War, the alliance between the United States and South Korea remains unbreakable, even during a period of rapid geopolitical change and emerging threats in the region," said Rep. Bera, who serves as Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, and Nonproliferation. "Our partnership, anchored in our shared values of democracy and a free market economy, continues to be the cornerstone of regional security and prosperity in Northeast Asia."

Rep. Bera continued "Our alliance also extends well beyond defense to deep and enduring people-to-people bonds. I am especially grateful to South Korea for lending a helping hand to our country during the COVID-19 pandemic by donating over 2,000,000 masks to help fill shortages in U.S. hospitals hit hardest by the virus, and by donating 500,000 masks to Korean War veterans throughout the U.S. This good-will act is the epitome of our close friendship.

Key to solving some of the biggest challenges of the 21^st century will be the continued close collaboration between our two countries on issues ranging from medical and scientific research to the promotion of good governance and combatting climate change and pandemics. I'm proud to lead the House of Representatives in reaffirming our strong bipartisan support for the United States-South Korea alliance and friendship. I look forward to 70 more years of strong partnership between our two great countries and people."

Rep. Bera serves as Co-Chair of the Congressional Korea Caucus and the Congressional Study Group on Korea and has been a strong advocate for the U.S.-South Korea alliance. He led a delegation trip to South Korea in April 2019 where delegations members met with Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-what, Defense Minister Jeong Kyeongdoo, the Speaker and Members of the National Assembly, United States Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Harry Harris, civil society leaders, representatives from leading Korean businesses, and local university students.
