Rep. Bera Statement on January 6th Commission

Bipartisan commission will be charged with investigating and reporting on the facts and causes of the January 6th insurrection

Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA) released the following statement after voting for legislation to create a bipartisan 9/11-type commission to investigate the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol.

"January 6th was a dark day in our nation's history," said Representative Bera. "The violent storming of the U.S. Capitol by a lawless mob seeking to stop the certification of the 2020 Presidential election was a direct assault on our democracy. The American people deserve a complete, accurate, and bipartisan investigation into the events of January 6th to ensure an attack like this never happens again."

The Commission will be charged with investigating and reporting upon the facts and causes of the January 6th attack on the Capitol as well as the influencing factors that may have provoked the attack on our democracy. The 10-person bipartisan Commission will be required to issue a final report by December 31, 2021 with findings regarding the facts and causes of the attack and recommendations to prevent future attacks of targeted violence and domestic terrorism against our democratic institutions including the U.S. Capitol.
