Representative Bera Statement on China Recalling Ambassador to Lithuania Over Opening of Taiwan Office
Washington, DC,
August 12, 2021
Today, Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation, issued the following statement in response to the decision by the People's Republic of China (PRC) to recall its ambassador to Lithuania over Vilnius's decision to open a Taiwan representative office. "I support Lithuania and its decision to open a Taiwanese representative office in Vilnius, and strongly oppose the PRC Government's retaliatory actions. Taiwan is a key U.S. partner in the Indo-Pacific, as we work with like-minded partners to advance an affirmative agenda in the region, based on our shared values. From supplying critical economic industries such as semiconductors to sharing best practices in responding to threats that undermine democracy like disinformation, Taiwan has much to offer the Indo-Pacific and the world. We must continue to oppose Beijing's efforts to isolate Taiwan from the international community. I support our European partners' efforts to further engage with Taiwan and call on Beijing to respect each country's right to engage with Taiwan in accordance with their individual ‘one China' policy." |
