Rep. Bera Statement on Nuclear Victims Remembrance Day in the Republic of the Marshall Islands

Representative Ami Bera (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation, released the following statement marking Nuclear Victims Remembrance Day in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

"Today is Nuclear Victims Remembrance Day in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, a national holiday on which the Marshallese commemorate those affected by the 67 nuclear tests the United States conducted between 1946 and 1958. I join the people and communities in the Marshall Islands, and the broader Pacific Islands region, in honoring the memory of those harmed by the nuclear testing program.

These tests are part of Marshallese history, but they are also part of U.S. history. We must all remember the human and environmental costs associated with nuclear weapons testing.

As Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation, I will continue to work towards a future where we move away from nuclear weapons and promote a safer world for generations to come."
