Rep. Bera Votes to Pass CHIPS and Science Act to Boost American Innovation and Increase Production of American-made Semiconductors

Bipartisan legislation will create 100,000 new good-paying jobs across the United States

Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-07) today voted to pass for the Creating Helpful Incentives for the Production of Semiconductors for America (CHIPS) and Science Act, bipartisan legislation to strengthen American semiconductor manufacturing, lower costs for American consumers, and turbocharge American science and technology innovation.

The CHIPS and Science Act passed the House of Representatives today with bipartisan support and now heads to the President's desk to be signed into law.

"At a time when American consumers are being hurt by rising prices due to strained global supply chains, it's imperative that more of our products are made in America by American workers. The CHIPS Act will catalyze manufacturing and research and development across the United States, including in Sacramento County which has been the proud home of several world-leading semiconductor companies including Intel and Micron. These investments would further the great work being done on the next generation of semiconductors here in Sacramento," said Representative Bera. "This historic legislation will bring additional good-paying jobs to Sacramento County, lower costs for American families and small businesses, reduce our reliance on foreign countries, and strengthen our position as the leading technology and science superpower of the 21st century. I am proud to help deliver this important win for Sacramento County workers and consumers.

The bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act would:

  • Provide $52 billion to boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing and strengthen our supply chains, and reduce our reliance on foreign countries like China;
  • Lower costs for consumers by making more semiconductors in America which are part of everything from cars to cell phones
  • Create 100,000 new good-paying jobs; and
  • Expand American leadership in science and technology innovation, research, and development through diversifying our scientific workforce and developing regional technology hubs.

Representative Bera is a senior member on the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee and serves as a Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation.
