Press Release
Rep. Bera Votes to Send Marriage Equality Bill to President Biden for Signature into Law
Washington, DC,
December 8, 2022
Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-07) today released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted to pass the Senate amended Respect for Marriage Act. “As a husband and father, I believe LGBTQ+ individuals should enjoy the same rights and benefits as everyone else, including the right to marry,” said Representative Ami Bera. “Today’s historic action by Congress guarantees equal rights and sends a strong message that hate and discrimination have no future in America. Love will always win.” Once signed into law, the Respect for Marriage Act will enshrine marriage equality for same sex and interracial couples for federal purposes; repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, which still officially remains on the books; and provide additional legal protections for marriage equality. Representative Bera serves as a member of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus and has received a 100% score from the Human Rights Campaign for his efforts supporting the LGBTQ+ community. |
