WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06) today released the following statement after the House of Representatives failed to elect a new Speaker of the House.

"Congress has very serious and urgent work to do to lower costs for working families, protect health care for millions of Americans, and support our allies abroad. This afternoon's vote has made it clear that no Speaker of the House will be elected with exclusively Republican support. 

“The majority must work with Democratic leadership to find a consensus candidate who is willing to govern responsibly through compromise and bipartisanship. Now is the time to come together. The eyes of the world are on us, and we must respond with strong, united leadership."

Representative Bera joined his Democratic colleagues in unanimous support of Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
