Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06) today issued the following statement after the election of U.S. Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
“For the past three weeks, an entire branch of our government has remained at a standstill due to the chaos of a vacant Speaker’s chair. Congress has urgent work to do to lower costs for working families, provide aid to our allies and partners around the world, and fully fund our government before a government shutdown in 23 days.
“I have not had the opportunity to work closely with Speaker Johnson yet but look forward to getting to know him in the coming weeks and months. I feel that the Speaker’s first speech to Congress was grounded in humility, and I agree that although our parties have fundamental differences, we have a duty to work together to restore faith in our Congressional institution. It is time to find a bipartisan path forward in the best interest of the American people.”
