U.S. Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06) today released the following statement on ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

“As a doctor and a member of Congress, the events of October 7, and the tragic loss of innocent civilian lives in the subsequent weeks, have been truly heart wrenching. Having met with Israeli families who have had loved ones taken hostage and listening to the stories of Palestinian American constituents who have suffered the loss of their own relatives has underscored the urgent need for a different path forward.

I am encouraged by the prospects of a temporary negotiated ceasefire and strongly urge the Netanyahu administration to accept the proposed terms being reported in return for the release of hostages and the delivery of essential humanitarian aid, including food, water, fuel and medications.

It is my hope that the Biden administration can leverage this momentary pause to advance negotiations towards a more promising future – one that guarantees the security of the Israeli people while allowing the Palestinian people to live a life of dignity and respect.  My commitment to advocating for a two-state solution remains unwavering, where Israelis and Palestinians can live side-by-side in peace. It may seem like an impossible dream, but the alternatives are simply untenable.”
