U.S. Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA) today released the following statement after the House Foreign Affairs Committee voted to advance the Countering Economic Coercion Act of 2023, which he co-leads with Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Tom Cole (R-OK), Chairman of the House Rules Committee.
“The People’s Republic of China’s persistent use of economic coercion poses a threat to regional stability in the Indo-Pacific, while eroding the sovereignty and economic well-being of our closest partners and allies,” said Representative Ami Bera, who serves as Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Indo-Pacific. “In the previous Congress, we proactively addressed Beijing’s economic coercion by passing my bill, the Countering China Economic Coercion Act, which established an interagency task force dedicated to tackling such practices. I am proud to continue these efforts this Congress through the Countering Economic Coercion Act of 2023, which has now passed the House Foreign Affairs Committee with strong bipartisan support. I look forward to this legislation receiving a vote on the House floor soon.”
Representative Bera previously introduced the Countering China Economic Coercion Act, bipartisan legislation that would establish the first-ever interagency task force to respond to the People's Republic of China's growing economic coercion against governments, businesses, organizations, and individuals. The Countering China Economic Coercion Act was signed into law by President Biden as part of the FY23 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
Bera also serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
