U.S. Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06) released a statement following his vote for a bipartisan continuing resolution to avert a government shutdown and fund the government through March 14, 2025: “The chaos and dysfunction of the last few days would have been avoided if Speaker Johnson honored the deal he made with Democrats to keep the government open, provide relief to Americans still reeling from natural disasters, fund childhood cancer research, extend the Farm Bill to support American agriculture, strengthen America’s national security posture, and support other vital programs. “While this legislation does not include several key provisions in the original bill, I voted for it because the cost of shutting down the government is far too high and the need to deliver billions in disaster relief to communities in California recovering from extreme weather events is far too great. “A government shutdown would hurt hardworking Sacramento County families, damage our economy, interrupt vital services, endanger our national security, and force millions of our brave servicemembers and government employees to work without a paycheck. “Going into the closely divided 119th Congress, we must work together to govern through bipartisanship and compromise–– not brinksmanship via tweet. As I prepare for another term serving as your voice in Washington, I will do everything in my power to ensure stable and responsible governance that prioritizes the needs of the American people.” |
