The Citrus Heights Water District is set to receive $585,000 for the construction of a groundwater well to provide an additional water supply for district residents.

Funding for the project comes from a federal omnibus funding package with Representative Ami Bera working to secure a portion of those funds for the project, the district said in a press release Thursday.

Called the Ella Well, the project aims to reduce surface water usage from lakes and rivers during dry months. The well will be equipped with "Aquifer Storage and Recovery technology," according to. The system can be used to pull ground water up from an underground aquifer, or inject water back into the aquifer during heavy rainfall years.

"We are always looking at how to best manage our water supply," said CHWD Board President Caryl Sheehan in a prepared statement. "Strategic investments in new infrastructure like the Ella Well give us additional options and put us in a strong position to continue providing water in a way that is sustainable and affordable."

District Spokeswoman Lea Park-Kim told The Sentinel in an earlier report the new well project is slated to begin its design phase this year, with completion of the project expected by late 2023.

The well will be located in the northern part of the water district's service area, Park-Kim said, declining to give a specific location for security reasons. The well is planned to be 350 feet deep.
