Rep. Ami Bera Votes for Bipartisan Legislation to Prevent Catastrophic Default on Nation’s Debt

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06) voted for bipartisan legislation to raise the debt ceiling and ensure the United States avoids a default on its national debt.
Today, U.S. Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06) voted for bipartisan legislation to raise the debt ceiling and ensure the United States avoids a default on its national debt.

“While this legislation is not perfect, it prevents a default that would have been catastrophic for Sacramento County seniors, veterans, and our economy,” said Representative Ami Bera. “I remain committed to working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to address government spending and reduce our national deficit. We cannot continue to saddle future generations with mountains of debt.”

The Bipartisan Budget Agreement prevents harmful cuts proposed by Congressional Republicans to reduce funding for critical priorities from education and transportation to housing and health care. The legislation:
  • Protects Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act;
  • Fully funds veterans’ medical care;
  • Protects the Inflation Reduction Act’s historic climate provisions; and
  • Locks in a two-year debt limit suspension and budget deal.
Rep. Bera has consistently voted to spur economic growth and reduce the national deficit. He voted for the Inflation Reduction Act, which is estimated to lower the federal deficit by $300 billion over the next decade. The legislation was signed into law in August 2022.
