WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06) today released the following statement after the House Foreign Affairs Committee voted unanimously to send his bipartisan bill, the End TB Now Act of 2023, to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for a full vote.

“Tuberculosis continues to inflict suffering on millions of people worldwide, despite being both preventable and curable,” said Representative Ami Bera M.D., Co-Chair of the House Tuberculosis Elimination Caucus. “As a doctor and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I have witnessed the profound impact of this disease both domestically and globally, and I firmly believe that the United States must demonstrate bold leadership with our partners to combat this deadly disease. This bipartisan, bicameral legislation represents a crucial step towards eradicating TB for good.”

On World Tuberculosis Day earlier this year, Representative Bera and Representative María Elvira Salazar (R-FL), Co-Chairs of the House Tuberculosis Elimination Caucus, introduced this bipartisan legislation to strengthen U.S. efforts to eliminate TB globally.

The bill directs the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to align U.S. tuberculosis control efforts with goals established by the international community. The End TB Now Act of 2023 will kickstart research and development of new tools to prevent, diagnose, treat, and control TB, and strengthen U.S. bilateral coordination with global organizations, including the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria, to develop and implement a comprehensive global TB response.
