Legislation Promotes Historic Inter-Parliamentary Dialogue to Strengthen Ties Between the Three Nations

Washington, D.C. –– Today, U.S. Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA-06), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific, applauded the bipartisan passage of his bill, the U.S.–Japan–ROK Trilateral Cooperation Act, out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Introduced by Rep. Bera and co-led by Representatives Joe Wilson (R-SC-02), Mike Kelly (R-PA-16), Joaquin Castro (D-TX-20), Adrian Smith (R-NE-03), and the late Gerry Connolly (D-VA-11), this legislation establishes a formal U.S.–Japan–Republic of Korea inter-parliamentary dialogue to bolster cooperation and advance shared interests and values.

This landmark effort builds on the momentum from the August 2023 Camp David Summit, which marked a new era of trilateral cooperation on regional security, deterrence, economic resilience, and shared democratic values in the Indo-Pacific.

“As we face growing threats in the Indo-Pacific, now is the time to invest in our closest alliances rooted in democratic principles,” said Representative Bera. “This bill creates a permanent forum for lawmakers from the United States, Japan, and South Korea to meet regularly, exchange ideas, and coordinate on challenges ranging from maritime security and economic growth to safeguarding democratic institutions. This inter-parliamentary dialogue will help ensure our nations continue working together to promote a free, open, and resilient Indo-Pacific for decades to come.”

Representative Bera has consistently worked to strengthen U.S. engagement in the Indo-Pacific and reinforce America’s role as a reliable ally. This legislation builds on his longstanding efforts to enhance diplomatic capacity, counter economic coercion, and promote regional stability.
