WASHINGTON, D.C. –– Today, U.S. Representatives Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA), Marilyn Strickland (D-WA)*, Joe Wilson (R-SC), and Mike Kelly (R-PA), Co-Chairs of the Congressional Korea Caucus, released a statement on the election of Lee Jae-myung as President of the Republic of Korea:
“We extend our sincere congratulations to President Lee Jae-myung and wish him and his administration well as they prepare to lead the Republic of Korea – a key and indispensable U.S. ally – through the many challenges facing the Korean Peninsula and beyond.
“As Co-Chairs of the Korea Caucus, we remain steadfastly committed to defending, strengthening, and enlarging the ironclad U.S.-Korea alliance. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War where our relationship was forged on the battlefield and now forms the linchpin of U.S. foreign policy in the Indo-Pacific region. Through our shared values, unshakable bond, and common future together, we will continue to ensure peace and prosperity on the Peninsula and in the region.
“We look forward to working together with President Lee Jae-myung and his administration during this critical time for the alliance. We also wish to recognize the estimated two million Korean Americans throughout the United States who play a vital role in maintaining our strong bilateral relationship.”
*Note: U.S. Representative Marilyn Strickland (D-WA) has assumed the role of Co-Chair following the passing of the Late Honorable Gerald E. Connolly of Virginia.
