We Must Act on Climate Change

As a congressman and a doctor, I'm committed to fighting climate change. From increased air pollution, greater spread of disease, or extreme weather like the disastrous California wildfires or severe drought, climate change is a serious public health crisis.

I took an oath as a doctor to do no harm. Inaction on climate change would break that oath.

That's why I published this op-ed with my colleague and fellow doctor, Congresswoman Kim Schrier, on why we need to act on climate change. Click here to read the article.

In Northern California, we've already seen the devastating impacts of climate change. The Camp Fire was the deadliest fire we've seen in 100 years, claiming 56 lives and costing $16 billion in damages. The fires released dangerous particles into the air, making the air so dangerous that Sacramento schools closed. Northern California cities had some of the worst air quality in the world.

Climate change isn't going away. So far this year California has had 50 wildfires, which is high for so early in the year. We can't wait until our communities are at a breaking point. We must act now.

I'm proud that the Democratic majority has taken important steps to address climate change. In May, I voted for the Climate Action Now Act, which takes steps to create green energy jobs and keeps us in the Paris Climate Accord. We can both save the planet and grow our economy.

This isn't about partisan politics, it's about the future of our planet. I hope that all Americans can join the fight to protect our planet.

Be well,

Ami Bera, M.D.
Member of Congress
