Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. released the following statement on the California State Legislature's passage of a water bond, which will be designated as Proposition 1 on the November ballot:
"California is facing a historic drought that's impacting many Sacramento County families and we're continuing to do everything we can to help those being hurt in the short term. We must also find long-term comprehensive solutions to our water issues, though, that don't pit one part of the state against another. That's why I commend Governor Brown and the legislature for working together to pass a water bond that makes some smart investments in water infrastructure, and doesn't include funding for the flawed plan to build twin tunnels. I've spoken out against that plan because it only diverts more water from the Sacramento area to Southern California, and does nothing to increase our water supply, all while costing the state billions. I'm fighting for real solutions to secure water access and storage throughout our entire state, and there is much more to do, but the water bond is a critical step in the right direction."
Bera has worked to preserve Sacramento's scarce water supply, fighting partisan, misguided proposals that would take from it, and voting to fund the Folsom Dam improvements that will allow our region to hold onto more water. He also supports other projects that would increase water storage, like improving the Shasta Dam, and water recycling and conservation efforts.
