Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA) Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation, released the following statement on President Biden's decision to continue with the August 31 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

"While I commend the Biden Administration and our brave men and women in uniform for safely evacuating over 70,000 individuals from Afghanistan thus far, there's still more work to be done, and more evacuations to take place.

Today, Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation, issued the following statement in response to the decision by the People's Republic of China (PRC) to recall its ambassador to Lithuania over Vilnius's decision to open a Taiwan representative office.

"I support Lithuania and its decision to open a Taiwanese representative office in Vilnius, and strongly oppose the PRC Government's retaliatory actions.

Yesterday, Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-07) voted for H.R. 3237, the Emergency Security Supplemental to Respond to January 6th Appropriations Act. The legislation, which passed with a strong bipartisan vote in the House, includes critical funding to support the U.S. Capitol Police force, reimburses the National Guard deployed to the Capitol after the January 6th insurrection, and expands and streamlines the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program to protect our Afghan partners who served alongside our troops in combat.

Yesterday, Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation, co-chaired a subcommittee hearing on U.S.-European Cooperation on China and the Broader Indo-Pacific. Co-chairing the hearing alongside Chairman Bera was Representative William Keating (D-MA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe, Energy, the Environment, and Cyber.

Today, the House of Representatives passed Representative Ami Bera's (D-CA) Securing America From Epidemics (SAFE) Act. The SAFE Act would authorize United States participation in the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), a public-private partnership developing vaccines for COVID-19 and other highly infectious pathogens that could become the next global pandemic. The bipartisan legislation was introduced with Representative Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA).

Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA), former Chief Medical Officer for Sacramento County, today sent a letter to U.S. Food and Drug Administration Acting Commissioner Janet Woodcock urging the FDA to grant full approval for COVID-19 vaccines as quickly as possible. The letter comes amid a worrying spike in COVID-19 cases in unvaccinated populations across the country.

Yesterday, the House Foreign Affairs Committee passed the Ensuring American Global Leadership and Engagement (EAGLE) Act, which included key legislation authored by Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation. The EAGLE Act includes Bera-led H.R. 3972, the Taiwan Peace and Stability Act, H.R. 3084, the Taiwan Fellowship Act, as well as key provisions from Rep. Bera's H.R. 3372, the Honoring Our Commitment to Elevate America's Neighbor Islands and Allies Act (OCEANIA) Act.
