Congressman Ami Bera (CA-07) released the following statement after the Trump administration announced it would open up 1.3 million acres of public land to mining, reversing President Obama's efforts to protect those lands:
"After opening up California's coastline to offshore drilling, the Trump administration has launched yet another attack on our state's economy and environment.

Yesterday, Congressman Ami Bera (CA-07) led 18 bipartisan members of Congress in a letter urging Secretary of Veterans Affairs David Shulkin to ensure funding for a program that reduces homelessness among veterans. The program, known as HUD-VASH, serves homeless veterans and combines HUD rental vouchers with VA case management services, including health care and counseling.

HR 1585, The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA), passed last week in the House of Representatives, which included an amendment from Representative Ami Bera (D-CA) that enhances culturally specific services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

This bill would ensure that we have high-quality data on where general surgeons are in short supply around the country, particularly in rural and other under-served communities.
Representatives Bera (D-CA), Gottheimer (D-NJ), Walorski (R-IN), and Marchant (R-TX) yesterday introduced H.R. 1398, the Health Insurance Tax Relief Act. This bill would stop the Affordable Care Act's Health Insurance Tax from going into effect until after 2021 and save consumers hundreds of dollars. According to America's Health Insurance Plans, the HIT could increase premiums by over $470 per family in 2020 if not stopped. The tax would also hit seniors and those with disabilities particularly hard.
