Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. sent a letter today to Secretary Robert McDonald requesting the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Veteran Affairs investigate the recent death of a Vietnam veteran at the Sacramento VA Medical Center after a do-not-resuscitate band was incorrectly placed on him. In the letter Bera said:

Earlier today, Rep. Ami Bera, M.D. met with dozens of members of Congress, state and local officials and business and community leaders for the No Labels National Ideas Meeting. This meeting served as the kick-off to a yearlong process to set a bipartisan vision for where America needs to go and how we get there. Bera participated in the meetings and helped lead a bipartisan discussion on protecting and strengthening Social Security and Medicare into the future. He made the following comment:

Congressman Ami Bera, M.D., applauds today's announcement that local manufacturer Siemens won the contract to produce San Francisco Muni's new light rail vehicles. This $648 million contract represents one of the largest light rail contract ever awarded in the U.S.

"As a doctor, I know firsthand how critical strengthening Medicare is for our seniors," said Bera. "Medicare Advantage plans cover 45 percent of Medicare recipients in Sacramento County, nearly 100,000 seniors, and deliver improved health outcomes while bringing down healthcare costs. I'll continue to fight against any cuts to this vital lifeline."

Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. met yesterday with Sacramento County Public Health Officer, Dr. Olivia Kasirye to discuss Sacramento County's emergency response and preparedness for Ebola and the upcoming flu season.

Bera asked about the County's plan and specifically about how lessons from the Ebola issues in Dallas are being incorporated into training and supplies here in Sacramento County.

Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. joined more than 30 Members of Congress today calling on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to withdraw their proposed rule change for Medicare Part D. (Text of letter below.) This rule would significantly change the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit, impacting the choice and affordability of drug coverage for nearly 13 million beneficiaries.

In response, CMS has announced they will delay some of the most concerning parts of the new rule and gather more input.
