With the posturing over what's happening along the border between Russia and Ukraine changing by the day — and sometimes by the hour — the United States' pledge to stand with Ukraine and what Russian President Vladimir Putin might do about that is ratcheting up concern in the region.

Rep. Ami Bera, D-Elk Grove, joined Sonseeahray for his first local interview since returning from Ukraine and Belgium with a bipartisan delegation trying to sort this situation out.

When doctors take a pledge to do no harm, it means we have an obligation to not knowingly hurt people who come to us for help. It also means we have a duty to talk with our patients about their options and to make sure they're fully informed partners in their own care. That's why, as both a doctor and a member of the U.S. Congress, I'm so deeply disturbed by a 38-year-old American policy known as the global gag rule.

U.S. Rep. Ami Bera, D-Elk Grove, on Dec. 6 expressed his support of the United States' diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing, in response to China's human rights abuses.

While President Joe Biden or any other U.S. government official will not be sent to the upcoming Winter Games, the diplomatic boycott – as opposed to a full boycott – allows U.S. athletes to compete in the games by their own choice.

This year's Winter Olympic Games are scheduled for Feb. 4-20, while the Paralympic Games will be held from March 4-13.
