Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, Central Asia, and Nonproliferation, today released the following statement after holding a Subcommittee hearing on the environmental, developmental, and security challenges in the Mekong sub-region. The sub-region comprises of five Southeast Asian nations that border the Mekong River: Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

Today, Representative Ami Bera (CA-07) voted for the Fiscal Year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), legislation that authorizes annual programming and spending for the Department of Defense and other U.S. national security programs. The NDAA passed the House of Representatives with strong bipartisan support and includes four amendments authored by Rep. Bera.

U.S. Representatives Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA) and Larry Bucshon, M.D. (R-IN), yesterday introduced bipartisan legislation to provide critical relief to physicians who are scheduled to receive Medicare payment cuts. The Supporting Medicare Providers Act of 2022 would ensure payments to these providers are kept stable and extend certain increases in payments for physicians’ services under the Medicare program through 2023.

This is the first House Foreign Affairs hearing focused on the region since July 2018.

U.S. Representatives Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-07) and Scott Peters (CA-52) today introduced comprehensive legislation to strengthen our ability to detect and prevent antimicrobial resistant ‘superbugs.'

Over two million Americans are sickened every year with antimicrobial-resistant infections, caused when germs develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them. The economic cost of antimicrobial resistance to the U.S. economy have ranged as high as $20 billion in excess direct health costs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The funding package previously passed the Senate and now heads to President Biden's desk for his signature into law.

On World Rabies Day, Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA) introduced comprehensive legislation to reduce the costs of rabies post-exposure treatment for uninsured individuals. The Affordable Rabies Treatment for Uninsured Act would establish a program to reimburse health care providers for furnishing post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to uninsured individuals. Bera introduced the legislation after receiving a regimen of immunoglobulin and rabies shots following a fox bite on the U.S.
