Congressmen Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-7) and Mark Meadows (NC-11) recently introduced The Doctors Helping Heroes Act, bipartisan legislation first introduced last year that will help deal with the serious shortage of doctors the Veterans Affairs system is facing and help decrease wait times at VA hospitals. The bill would allow foreign doctors trained in the U.S. to practice at VA hospitals and in under-served areas where they are sorely needed.
Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. today urged officials at the Oakland Veterans Affairs Center to reach out to individual veterans who may have been impacted by the mismanagement of records detailed in a report released last week to ensure that they receive the benefits they have earned. The Oakland VA serves Veterans in Northern California who are receiving and applying for benefits, including any of the 95,000 in the 7th Congressional District of California which Bera represents.
Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. sent a letter today to Secretary Robert McDonald requesting the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Veteran Affairs investigate the recent death of a Vietnam veteran at the Sacramento VA Medical Center after a do-not-resuscitate band was incorrectly placed on him. In the letter Bera said:

Both the House and Senate have passed bills to address the crisis within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and have been in negotiations for more than five weeks while veterans wait for a solution.

The bill would allow foreign doctors trained in the U.S. to get visas to practice at VA hospitals where they are sorely needed.
Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. led a bipartisan group yesterday in urging the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to thoroughly review staffing levels at VA hospitals and facilities. In a letter to the GAO, they urged the government watchdog to examine if the VA has enough physicians and health care professionals to adequately care for veterans in a timely manner. Bera made the following comment:
Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. released the following statement in response to a report from the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that found the health care system had delayed care to veterans and manipulated scheduling practices to conceal the delays at a number of VA facilities:
This past Memorial Day Rep. Ami Bera, M.D. travelled throughout the county to recognize, honor, and remember the fallen and their families. "We are forever grateful for their service and sacrifice," said Rep. Bera. "Memorial Day is a time to remember those who've made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. As a doctor who's helped care for World War II, Korean, and Vietnam War veterans, I'm continually humbled by the enormous sacrifices our heroes and their families have made." Rep.
Congressman Ami Bera recently joined several of his congressional colleagues urging VA Secretary Shinseki to audit VA hospitals across the country and share the full details of his audit. Read their letter.
